What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum. A total of 7 different antigenic botulinum toxins have been discovered. These; Botulinum Toxin-A, -B, -C, -D, -E, -F and -G. The most commonly used form for aesthetic and cosmetic purposes is Botulinum Toxin-A.

What does it do? How does it affect?

The contraction command transmitted from our brain to the muscles is transmitted to the muscles by the nervous system cells, and contraction occurs through a series of reactions. Botulinum toxin creates a temporary paralysis by preventing the transmission of contraction commands from nerve cells to the muscles in the area where it is applied. Thus, the muscle stops contracting temporarily and the expression lines caused by the contraction are relieved.

How is it applied?

Botox is an injection procedure. Optionally, the area to be treated is anesthetized with local anesthetic creams or cooled by applying ice. Then, after the areas where the application will be made are cleaned, the toxin is injected into the muscle in small doses with fine-tipped needles. The process takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

When does the effect start and how long does it last?

The injected toxin begins to act chemically within 24-48 hours after the procedure, but the person begins to feel the effect between the 4th and 7th days. The effect continues to increase for 2-3 weeks. Although the effect varies from person to person and the amount of dose applied, it lasts for 3-6 months.

Which type of wrinkles is it effective on?

Wrinkles; They are divided into two groups: dynamic (appearing with muscle contraction) and static wrinkles (appearing without muscle contraction). Static wrinkles are again divided into two groups: fine lines and deep lines. Lines; While they are dynamic lines at a relatively young age, they begin to take on the characteristics of static lines with age, as the amount of collagen-elastin in the skin decreases, and with the addition of environmental factors such as sun damage, smoking, and nutritional habits. Botulinum toxin gives the best results in dynamic wrinkles and fine static wrinkles. While wrinkles are expected to heal after 5-6 consecutive applications in moderate to deep static wrinkles, botulinum toxin application may not give satisfactory results in the treatment of deep static wrinkles and additional applications such as hyaluronic acid filling, dermabrasion, chemical peeling and skin rejuvenation may be needed.

Does Botox Have Side Effects?

Botox injections have been used for both treatment and cosmetic purposes for many years. Botox does not have any serious side effects in cosmetic application doses. Although very rare, undesirable results such as drooping eyebrows and eyelids may occur, but this effect is temporary.

To whom can it be applied?

Although it is applied to people of all ages and genders, it is generally recommended to start applying it in the early 30s. It is not recommended for use in pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers due to lack of sufficient research.
